ChemMAX Permeation Selector


Lakeland's chemical suit range offers wider choice to allow better targeting of garment selection at the specific chemical or chemicals in use, thus optimising the combination of protection, comfort and cost.

The first table below shows permeation test results against the chemicals listed in the EN 6529 permeation test method for each of 6 Lakeland fabric options.

The second and third tables show published permeation results of the chemical suit ranges of two common competitors. Equivalent products are listed in the same columns to allow easy comparison. Green cells show where a normalised breakthrough measured at 1µg / min / cmhas been achieved.

This graphically demonstrates how the wider Lakeland range enables best choice for the best protection at the lowest cost.

For example:- 
In the case of Ethyl Acetate and n-Hexane, neither ChemMAX 1 nor the competitors' equivalents (A1 and B1) offer protection. However, with both the competitors' ranges users would need to jump to the ChemMAX 3 equivalents (A2 & A3), whereas with Lakeland users can select the mid-range ChemMAX 2  - which is both less expensive and lighter so more comfortable.

This applies to many more chemicals - in fact for 63% of 84 chemicals compared, ChemMAX 2 features similar or better permeation than the competitors' more expensive option.

  • Chemicals are tested at a concentration of 100% or saturation unless otherwise stated.
  • Beware! Chemical testing according to EN 6529 is conducted at 25% oC +/- 5oC. permeation rates may vary considerably at higher ambient temperatures
  • Material Safety Data Sheets on many commonly used chemicals can be found here. (Lakeland make no claim or guarantee that the information on these sheets is correct).
  • Normalized breakthrough times are a reflection of controlled laboratory tests according to EN6529 (or previous versions EN 369 & EN 374-3). “Normalized Breakthrough” is defined as the time to reach a measured PERMEATION RATE of 1.0µg / min / cm2. This DOES NOT indicate the time to any measured breakthrough of a chemical nor that NO TRACE of the chemical has permeated through the fabric in less than 480 Minutes. Further, results may vary according to lab, detection methods and sensitivity, and ambient conditions such as temperature.
  • These results are therefor not intended to indicate any guaranteed duration of “safe use” for any garment but rather to provide a basic guide to preliminary selection and to indicate chemical protective capabilities relative to each other
  • Chemical suit selection should also be made on the basis of design requirements as well as fabric chemical barrier
